Acts 10:38 itself holds the key: “with the Holy Ghost and with power.” This means it wasn’t with oil,<\/strong> and so not associated with either a Kingly or Priestly anointing specifically. (Anointing in general doesn’t have to refer to these.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psalm 45:6-7 also indicates that the gladness is<\/em> the anointing (this is certainly the sense in which I have always understand the ‘anoint him with the oil of gladness’\u2014that gladness is spoken of as an oil which God is then said to anoint with).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is similar to language such as ‘clothe with power,’ or even:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Job 39:19 (KJV)<\/strong> Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Just as anointing symbolizes God-ordained authority in priestly and royal initiations, so God bears witness to the ministry and right to teach and exercise authority of Jesus by anointing Him by His Spirit at its beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or is the idea that holy spirit was the true anointing substance of which oil was only a type?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Indeed. The anointing of Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit by God the Father is an allusion to Psa. 45:6\u20137 wherein David describes God [the Father] anointing God [the Son] with the \u201coil of gladness\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6<\/sup> O\u2019 God, your throne is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a right scepter. 7<\/sup> You loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore, O\u2019 God, your God anointed you with the oil of gladness more than your companions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The LXX translates the Hebrew by the Greek \u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9 (elaion agalliase\u014d<\/em>). The Greek word \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9 is declined from the lemma \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03af\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2. The Holy Spirit is referred to as \u201coil\u201d because it is used to anoint; moreover, it is the oil of \u201cgladness<\/strong>\u201d because its anointing produces gladness (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03af\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) in the believer. Earlier, in Acts 2, the apostle Peter exhorted the unbelievers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

38<\/sup> Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Those who received his word were baptized, likewise receiving the Holy Spirit, and that same Holy Spirit produced in them gladness. Hence, it is written,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

46<\/sup> And they, continuing daily in one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, ate their food with gladness<\/strong> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9) and simplicity of heart,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Augustine explained why Jesus of Nazareth was called \u201cChrist,\u201d making reference to the same Psalms:2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is there, no matter how slow, but must here recognize Christ whom we preach, and in whom we believe, if he hears that He is God, whose throne is forever and ever, and that He is anointed by God, as God indeed anoints, not with a visible, but with a spiritual and intelligible chrism? For who is so untaught in this religion, or so deaf to its far and wide spread fame, as not to know that Christ is named from this chrism, that is, from this anointing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quis non hic Christum, quem praedicamus et in quem credimus, quamlibet sit tardus, agnoscat, cum audiat Deum, cuius sedes est in saecula saeculorum, et unctum a Deo, utique sicut unguit Deus, non visibili, sed spiritali atque intellegibili chrismate? Quis enim tam rudis est in hac religione vel tam surdus adversus eius famam longe lateque diffusam, ut Christum a chrismate, hoc est ab unctione appellatum esse non noverit?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And was Jesus being anointed as king of Israel?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Yes, he was, but not king of \u201cIsrael according to the flesh\u201d (\u1f41 \u1f38\u03c3\u03c1\u03b1\u1f74\u03bb \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70 \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1),3<\/sup> but rather, king of Israel according to the spirit (\u1f41 \u1f38\u03c3\u03c1\u03b1\u1f74\u03bb \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70 \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1),4<\/sup> the \u201cIsrael of God.\u201d5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Early Church Fathers noticed such a distinction. Augustine wrote,6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, this spiritual Israel is distinguished from that carnal Israel (which is of one nation) by newness of grace, not by nobility of descent, and by mind, not by race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hic ergo Israel spiritalis ab illo Israele carnali, qui est unius gentis, novitate gratiae, non nobilitate patriae, et mente non gente distinguitur.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, in his Homily on 1 Corinthians, concerning 1 Cor. 10:18, John Chrysostom wrote,7<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBehold Israel according to the flesh: have not those who eat the sacrifices communion with the altar?\u201d Again, from the old covenant he leads them to this point also. For because they were far beneath the greatness of the things which had been spoken, he persuades them both from former things and from those to which they were accustomed. And he well says well, \u201caccording to the flesh,\u201d as though they themselves were according to the Spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaaba<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Quran there is no claim that Abraham built Kaaba in Mecca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muslim interpreters base their claim on verse 2:127<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2:127 And when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the Temple, [they prayed:] “O our Sustainer! Accept Thou this from us: for, verily, Thou alone art all-hearing, all-knowing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the Temple here is the translation of \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064a\u062a (Beit<\/em>). We see no mention to Kaaba, but to Beit. <\/em>But muslim interpreters say that Beit <\/em>in this verse refers to Kaaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traditional interpreters also base there claim upon another verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3:196 Behold, the first Temple ever set up for mankind was indeed the one at Bakkah: rich in blessing, and a [source of] guidance unto all the worlds,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, we see that Temple in this verse is the translation of Arabic \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064a\u062a (Beit<\/em>), which claimed it was built at Bakkah \u0628\u0628\u0643\u0629 . Interpreters claim that the letter \u0628 (bi) that precede the word Bakkah is a preposition of place, that is it is referes to a place where this beit <\/em>was built. This is false, because the letter \u0628 is not used as a preposition of place in this way. The preposition \u0641\u064a (fi) should was used in this case. They also claim that Bakkah in this verse refers to Makkah (Mecca), because in Arabic one can change letter M to B. This is flagrant lie, because in Arabic one never can change letter M to B. Yes, in Arabic one can change letter Qaf to Kaf and vice versa or letter Sin to Shin and vice versa, but never letter Mim to Baa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, what is meant by Beit <\/em>in these two verses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without any doubt Beit<\/em> here is Beit Al-Maqdis<\/em>, derived from Hebrew Beit HaMikdash<\/em>, or in English Holy Temple \/ Scared Temple<\/em> located in Jerusalem, where Beit <\/em>means Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
