{"id":1670,"date":"2021-03-01T11:37:41","date_gmt":"2021-03-01T16:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abudinen.com\/blog\/?p=1670"},"modified":"2021-04-11T11:48:51","modified_gmt":"2021-04-11T16:48:51","slug":"codex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abudinen.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/01\/codex\/","title":{"rendered":"Codex"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Codex Vaticanus originally contained a virtually complete copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Septuagint\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Septuagint<\/a> (&#8220;LXX&#8221;), lacking only 1-4 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maccabees\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Maccabees<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prayer_of_Manasseh\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Prayer of Manasseh<\/a>. The original 20 leaves containing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Genesis\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Genesis<\/a> 1:1\u201346:28a (31 leaves) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psalms\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Psalm<\/a> 105:27\u2013137:6b have been lost and were replaced by pages transcribed by a later <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scribe\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hand<\/a> in the 15th century.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Codex_Vaticanus#cite_note-10\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_Kings\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2 Kings<\/a> 2:5\u20137, 10-13 are also lost because of a tear to one of the pages.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Codex_Vaticanus#cite_note-11\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> The order of the Old Testament books in the Codex is as follows: Genesis to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_Chronicles\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2 Chronicles<\/a> as normal; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1_Esdras\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">1 Esdras<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Ezra\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2 Esdras<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ezra-Nehemiah\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ezra-Nehemiah<\/a>); the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psalms\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Psalms<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Proverbs\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Proverbs<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecclesiastes\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ecclesiastes<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Song_of_Songs\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Song of Songs<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Job\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Job<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Wisdom\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wisdom<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ben_Sira\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ecclesiasticus<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Esther\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Esther<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Judith\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Judith<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Tobit\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tobit<\/a>; the minor prophets from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hosea\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hosea<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malachi\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Malachi<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Isaiah\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Isaiah<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Jeremiah\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jeremiah<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Baruch\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Baruch<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Lamentations\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lamentations<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epistle_of_Jeremiah\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Epistle of Jeremiah<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Ezekiel\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ezekiel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Daniel\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Daniel<\/a>. This order differs from that followed in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Codex_Alexandrinus\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Codex Alexandrinus<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Codex_Vaticanus#cite_note-12\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extant <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Testament\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New Testament<\/a> of the Vaticanus contains the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gospel\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gospels<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acts_of_the_Apostles\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Acts<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Epistles\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">General Epistles<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pauline_Epistles\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pauline Epistles<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epistle_to_the_Hebrews\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Epistle to the Hebrews<\/a> (up to Hebrews 9:14, \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1[\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03b9); it is lacking <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1_Timothy\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2_Timothy\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2 Timothy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epistle_to_Titus\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Titus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epistle_to_Philemon\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Philemon<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Revelation\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Revelation<\/a>. It is the form found in the largest number of surviving <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuscript\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">manuscripts<\/a>. The New Testament text of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_Orthodox_Church\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Orthodox Church<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Patriarchal_Text&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Patriarchal Text<\/a>, as well as those utilized in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lectionaries\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lectionaries<\/a>, is based on this text-type. Whilst varying in at least 1,830 places,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byzantine_text-type#cite_note-1\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> it also underlies the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Textus_Receptus\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Textus Receptus<\/a> Greek text used for most <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reformation\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Reformation<\/a>-era translations of the New Testament into vernacular languages. Modern translations mainly use <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Textual_criticism#Eclecticism\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Eclectic<\/a> editions that conform more often to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexandrian_text-type\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Alexandrian text-type<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Codex Basiliensis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Codex Basiliensis A. N. IV. 1<\/strong>, known as <em>Minuscule 2<\/em> (on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biblical_manuscript#Gregory-Aland\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gregory-Aland<\/a>), \u03b5 1214 (in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biblical_manuscript#Von_Soden\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Soden&#8217;s<\/a> numbering),<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Codex_Basiliensis_A._N._IV._1#cite_note-Gregory1908-1\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> is a Greek <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Testament_minuscule\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">minuscule<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuscript\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">manuscript<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Testament\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New Testament<\/a>, dated <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palaeography\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">palaeographically<\/a> to the 11th or 12th century.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Codex_Basiliensis_A._N._IV._1#cite_note-Aland-2\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> It was used by Erasmus in his edition of Greek text of the New Testament and became the basis for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Textus_Receptus\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Textus Receptus<\/a> in the Gospels.
