Cecil John Rhodes<\/strong> PC (5 July 1853 \u2013 26 March 1902)[1] was a British mining magnate and politician in southern Africa who served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. An ardent believer in British imperialism, Rhodes and his British South Africa Company founded the southern African territory of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), which the company named after him in 1895. South Africa’s Rhodes University is also named after him. Rhodes set up the provisions of the Rhodes Scholarship, which is funded by his estate. He also put much effort towards his vision of a Cape to Cairo Railway through British territory.[2]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While attending Oriel College, Rhodes became a Freemason in the Apollo University Lodge. Although initially he did not approve of the organisation, he continued to be a South African Freemason until his death in 1902. The shortcomings of the Freemasons, in his opinion, later caused him to envisage his own secret society with the goal of bringing the entire world under British rule.[24][page needed<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A collection of 35 gaming dice were recently revealed in Jerusalem. Over the past few years, the Israel Antiquities Authority has been conducting excavations beneath the Western Wall prayer plaza.  In 2017, they unearthed a small theater structure dating from the Roman period, after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.  The dice, which were discovered in these excavations, are made of bone and are similar to dice used today.  One in particular has two fours, but no three on it, perhaps indicating that it was a loaded die with which someone could take advantage of others.  They provide a glimpse into everyday life in the Roman colony of Aelia Capitolina, where soldiers and citizens enjoyed games of chance between battles or on breaks from building structures or while awaiting performances at the theater.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly Intact Roman Chariot Unearthed at Pompeii<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A four-wheeled, ceremonial chariot was recently unearthed in excavations in villa at Civita Giuliana, north of the walls of the ancient city of Pompeii.  The chariot was found in a remarkable state of preservation and, amazingly, hadn\u2019t been damaged by the collapsed walls and ceiling of the room.  It still exhibits its iron components along with bronze and tin decorations, which depict florals and the Greek god Eros. Excavators and conservationists are working to extract the fragile chariot, treating the wood and metals and using plaster to fill voids left by organic matter that had decomposed.  This has allowed them to save the shaft and platform of the chariot, and has revealed the imprint of the ropes.  Massimo Osanna, the director of the archaeological site, believes the theme of the ornate decorations on the chariot suggests it may have been used in community festivals and marriage rituals, possibly even being used to transport a bride to her new household.  Pompeii, was destroyed in a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.  Because it was buried in ash, the city was preserved at the moment of its destruction, and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monumental Gateway in Honor of Cyrus the Great\u2019s Conquest of Babylon Unearthed Near Persepolis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A team of Iranian and Italian archaeologists have discovered the remains of a monumental gateway which Cyrus\u2019 the Great commissioned to be built in honor of his conquest of Babylon.  The structure was unearthed at Tall-e-Ajori near Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire.  The gateway, which was 30-40 meters wide and would have stood 12 meters high, was constructed out of mud brick.  The bricks on the lower part of the walls are decorated with lotus flowers and the fa\u00e7ade of the walls are decorated with mythical animals, and symbols.   The central room inside the gateway has Babylonian and Elamite inscriptions.  These inscriptions, and the carbon dating, which places construction after 539 BC, have led the archaeologists to conclude this gateway was constructed to celebrate Cyrus the Great\u2019s conquest of Babylon, and would have been operational during the reign of his son Cambyses.  The Persian conquest of Babylon (Dan. 5:31), and Cyrus the Great\u2019s order allowing the Jews in exile to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple (2 Chr 36:22-23; Ez 1:1-4) are important events recorded in Scripture and affirmed by archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damage Done to Mt. Ebal Altar Site<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Workers for the Palestinian Authority recently destroyed part of an ancient wall surrounding the site of the famous altar on Mt. Ebal.  The PA was paving a new road nearby, connecting the village of Atzira a-Shamalia and the city of Nablus (ancient Shechem), when workers crushed stones from one side of the wall to use as substrate for the new road.  The altar was excavated by Adam Zertal in the 1980\u2019s; more recently, ABR\u2019s Dr. Scott Stripling led a team that wet-sifted material from Zertal\u2019s dig.  Beneath the rectangular altar on Mt. Ebal, and right at the epicentre, lies an earlier, circular altar.  Many evangelical scholars believe this to be the remains of Joshua\u2019s altar (Jos 8:30).  There have been calls from numerous archaeologists to protect archaeological sites throughout Israel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Study of Tablets from Deir ‘Alla, Jordan Reveal Late Bronze Age Alphabet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A new study of tablets which were discovered in the 1960\u2019s at Tell Deir \u2018Alla has revealed a Late Bronze Age alphabet, the only one known from this time period in Jordan.  The clay tablets were discovered while archaeologists were excavating a Late Bronze Age temple and auxiliary buildings that had been destroyed sometime around 1180 BC.  They were rectangular in shape, inscribed with a stylus, and featured a script with linear lines and dots at the ends.  Over the years 15 such tablets have been unearthed at Tell Deir \u2018Alla.  While numerous attempts at translation have been made, a satisfactory reading remained illusive.  Recent studies have demonstrated that the script was written from left to right and contained 29 signs, small enough to consider it an alphabet.  Scholars have concluded that the Deir \u2018Alla tablets share similarities with the proto-Sinaitic script and other proto-Canaanite alphabets.  The language has been identified as Northwest Semitic, which the authors of the study are calling Canaanite. By reading the signs with reference to later Hebrew grammar, which preserves earlier Canaanite forms, the tablets seem to contain short ritual texts and cultic prophetic proverbs related to the local temple.  It appears that the Deir \u2018Alla alphabet disappeared sometime around the end of the Late Bronze Age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davidic-Era “Royal Purple” Dye Found on Ancient Clothe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scholars have identified \u201cargaman\u201d royal purple dye on three pieces of ancient fabric discovered at Slaves Hill, an ancient copper smelting camp in the Timna Valley.  The results of their study were published in a recent article in the journal PLOS One entitled, \u201cEarly evidence of royal purple dyed textile from Timna Valley (Israel).\u201d  The dry conditions at Timna preserved the clothe, which was dated using Carbon-14 to 1000 BC.  Researchers tested the textiles at the Bar Ilan University laboratory using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis, which identified molecules of 6-monobromoindigotin and 6,6-dibromoindigotin, unique to murex sea snails.  Dye from murex snails was used in ancient times to produce the rich color, also known as Tyrian purple, which was highly-prized among elite and royals.  This purple dye, known in the Hebrew Bible as \u201cargaman\u201d is mentioned in numerous passages, and is associated with the Tabernacle (Ex 26:1; 27:16) and royalty (Sg 3:10; Est 1:6).  The authors of the study suggest that this discovery will shed new light on the fashions of the elite and royalty in the early Edomite and Israelite kingdoms 3000-years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Byzantine-Era \u201cChrist, Born of Mary\u201d Inscription Discovered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Archaeologists digging at et-Taiyiba, in the northern Jezreel valley, have unearthed the remains of a Byzantine church, along with a Greek inscription with the phrase, \u201cChrist, born of Mary”.  The inscribed stone was once part of the lintel at the entrance of the church, which dates to the 5th century; the church was discovered in preparation for the construction of a road.  The full inscription reads, “Christ born of Mary. This work of the most God-fearing and pious bishop [Theodo]sius and the miserable Th[omas] was built from the foundation – -. Whoever enters should pray for them.”  The inscription would have greeted the worshipers to bless them; the phrase \u201cChrist, born of Mary,\u201d may have been intended to protect people from evil.  In addition to the inscription, archaeologists discovered mosaic pavements arranged in geometric designs.  Theodosius, one of the men the inscription refers to, was a Christian bishop of nearby Bet She\u2019an and likely the building’s founder.  The Byzantine church will add to our knowledge of the life and worship of Christians who lived in the region during the Byzantine era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temple to Aphrodite Discovered Near Biblical Smyrna<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Archaeologists in Turkey have discovered the remains of a temple to Aphrodite dating to the 5th century BC.  The structure was found near the modern-day city of Izmir, the site of biblical Smyrna.   Scholars were carrying out a series of surface surveys in the rural area when they came across the ruins.  They found part of a statue of a woman, a figure of a terracotta female head, and an ancient inscription stating, \u201cThis is the sacred area.\u201d  The archaeologists believe this was a rural temple dedicated to the cult of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, love and procreation (she was sometimes identified with seafaring and war as well).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dance Floor Where John the Baptist was Condemned Identified<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The courtyard where Salome danced and where Herod Antipas condemned John the Baptist to death was recently identified at Machaerus, the fortress of King Herod in modern-day Jordan.  The discovery was published by Gyozo Voros, director of the Machaerus excavations, in a book entitled, Holy Land Archaeology on Either Side: Archaeological Essays in Honour of Eugenio Alliata (Fondazione Terra Santa, 2020).  The excavation team discovered an apsidal-shaped niche beside a courtyard, which they believe is the remains of the throne where Herod Antipas would have sat.
