What was later to become the written scripture of the\u00a0Sutta Pitaka<\/em>\u00a0was first orally rehearsed at the\u00a0first Buddhist council<\/a>\u00a0that was held shortly after the Buddha’s death. The first council also defined the set of rules (Vinaya<\/a>) that governed the life of monks and nuns within the\u00a0monastic community<\/a>. Tradition holds that little was added to the Canon after this (meaning its core?).
