Abstract<\/strong> The hearing of microwave pulses is a unique exception to the airborne or bone-conducted sound energy normally encountered in human auditory perception. The hearing apparatus commonly responds to airborne or bone-conducted acoustic or sound pressure waves in the audible frequency range. But the hearing of microwave pulses involves electromagnetic waves whose frequency ranges from hundreds of MHz to tens of GHz. Since electromagnetic waves (e.g., light) are seen but not heard, the report of auditory perception of microwave pulses was at once astonishing and intriguing. Moreover, it stood in sharp contrast to the responses associated with continuous-wave microwave radiation. Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that the microwave auditory phenomenon does not arise from an interaction of microwave pulses directly with the auditory nerves or neurons along the auditory neurophysiological pathways of the central nervous system. Instead, the microwave pulse, upon absorption by soft tissues in the head, launches a thermoelastic wave of acoustic pressure that travels by bone conduction to the inner ear. There, it activates the cochlear receptors via the same process involved for normal hearing. Aside from tissue heating, microwave auditory effect is the most widely accepted biological effect of microwave radiation with a known mechanism of interaction: the thermoelastic theory. The phenomenon, mechanism, power requirement, pressure amplitude, and auditory thresholds of microwave hearing are discussed in this paper. A specific emphasis is placed on human exposures to wireless communication fields and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The microwave auditory effect<\/strong>, also known as the microwave hearing effect<\/strong> or the Frey effect<\/strong>, consists of the human perception of audible clicks, or even speech, induced by pulsed or modulated radio frequencies. The communications are generated directly inside the human head without the need of any receiving electronic device. The effect was first reported by persons working in the vicinity of radar<\/a>transponders<\/a> during World War II<\/a>. In 1961, the American<\/a>neuroscientist<\/a> Allan H. Frey studied this phenomenon and was the first to publish information on the nature of the microwave auditory effect.[1]<\/a>[2]<\/a><\/sup> The cause is thought to be thermoelastic expansion of portions of the auditory apparatus,[3]<\/a><\/sup> although competing theories explain the results of holographic interferometry<\/a> tests differently.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neuromodulation is an evolving therapy that can involve a range of electromagnetic stimuli such as a magnetic field (rTMS<\/a>), an electric current<\/a>, or a drug instilled directly in the subdural space (intrathecal drug delivery). Emerging applications involve targeted introduction of genes or gene regulators and light (optogenetics<\/a>), and by 2014, these had been at minimum demonstrated in mammalian models, or first-in-human data had been acquired.[1]<\/a><\/sup> The most clinical experience has been with electrical stimulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/strong> Available data indicate that exposure to EMF can cause adverse health effects. It is also reported that biological effects may occur at very low levels of exposure. The RFR effect can be more intensified based on the range and duration of the exposure. The RFR can also exert adverse effects in the first few minutes. Persistent exposures of EMF radiation can result in health hazards because these radiations interfere with normal physiological and biological function of the body. EMF works as an environmental pollutant and has undesirable health effects on animals and humans. Several developed countries have already established health-based guidelines for exposure level for their countries. India has also developed health-based guidelines for exposure level of RFR from cell phones and cell phone base stations, but given the difference in environmental conditions, and lower muscle contents, bone mineral density, fat content, etc<\/em>., of Indians than the people of developed nations, there is a need to have a mid-course correction in the existing exposure limit of RFR in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract<\/strong> Mobile phones (MP) emit low-level electromagnetic fields that have been reported to affect neural function in humans; however, demonstrations of such effects have not been conclusive. The purpose of the present study was to test one of the strongest findings in the literature; that of increased “alpha” power in response to MP-type radiation. Healthy participants (N = 120) were tested using a double-blind counterbalanced crossover design, with each receiving a 30-min Active and a 30-min Sham Exposure 1 week apart, while electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded. Resting alpha power (8-12 Hz) was then derived as a function of time, for periods both during and following exposure. Non-parametric analyses were employed as data could not be normalized. Previous reports of an overall alpha power enhancement during the MP exposure were confirmed (relative to Sham), with this effect larger at ipsilateral than contralateral sites over posterior regions. No overall change to alpha power was observed following exposure cessation; however, there was less alpha power contralateral to the exposure source during this period (relative to ipsilateral).
