        In the couple of weeks since he introduced the idea that superconducting sheets can reflect gravity waves, Raymond Chiao from the University of California, Merced, has been busy with a couple of buddies working out how big this effect is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Let\u2019s review the idea. Chiao\u2019s claim is that gravity has a fundamentally different affect on localised particles compared to delocalised ones and that a type 1 superconductor contains both: ordinary ions and electrons that make up the ionic lattice of the superconductor and the superconducting Cooper pairs of electrons which are entirely delocalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The ions and electrons can be thought of as \u201cfreely floating, non-interacting \u201cdust particles\u201d undergoing free-fall motion along well defined trajectories (i.e., geodesics),\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Whereas the position of Cooper pairs is entirely uncertain and so cannot be influenced by gravity in the same way. When a superconductor is struck by a gravitational wave, \u201cthis causes the Cooper pairs to undergo non-geodesic motion relative to the geodesic motion of its ionic lattice,\u201d says Chiao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        In other words, the gravitational waves give the ionic lattice a good shaking but leave the Cooper pairs untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        This separationof charge causes the superconductor to become electrically polarised, generating a restoring force known as the Coulomb force. Chiao and co describe it like this: \u201cThe enormous back-action of the Coulomb force on the motion of the Cooper pairs, greatly enhances the mass supercurrents generated by the wave, so that they become strong enough to produce reflection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Chiao and co ask how big is this effect of a gravitational wave on a thin superconducting sheet compared to the effect on an ordinary conducting sheet. The answer? 42 orders of magnitude bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Yep, 42 orders of magnitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        That has all kinds of implications. The title of Chiao\u2019s last paper on this topic was : \u201cDo Mirrors for Gravitational Waves Exist?<\/a>\u201d He and his mates now feel able to answer this question with the following statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \u201cWe therefore conclude that laboratory-scale superconducting mirrors for gravitational microwaves exist.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

        When a gravitational wave at microwave frequencies impinges on a thin, type I superconducting film, the radical delocalization of the film’s negatively charged Cooper pairs, which is due to the Uncertainty Principle, causes them to undergo non-geodesic motion relative to the geodesic motion of the decohered, positively charged ions in the film’s lattice, which is due to the Equivalence Principle. The ensuing charge separation leads to a virtual plasma excitation. This “Heisenberg-Coulomb” effect enormously enhances the interaction of a gravitational wave with a superconductor relative to that of normal matter, so that the wave will be reflected even from a very thin superconducting film. This result is presented using the BCS theory and a superconducting plasma model.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

        Homo heidelbergensis<\/em> is a variety of human whose skulls have less prominent features than Neanderthals. Their place on the evolutionary tree is debated among evolutionists, but they are thought to have evolved later than Homo erectus<\/em> and to be the last common ancestor of Neanderthals and early modern humans (Homo sapiens<\/em>). Those at La Sima de los Huesos, discovered in 1990, were initially dated at 350,000 years. The Atapuerca excavation led by Madrid University\u2019s Juan Luis Arsuaga identified the fossils as Homo heidelbergensis<\/em> and re-dated them to 600,000 years.
