But fevers aren\u2019t just a byproduct of our immune response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, it\u2019s the other way around: an elevated body temperature triggers cellular mechanisms that ensure the immune system takes appropriate action against the offending virus or bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So say researchers hailing from two academic institutions in the United Kingdom: the University of Warwick in Coventry and the University of Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior researchers Profs. David Rand and Mike White led teams of mathematicians and biologists to understand what happens at cellular level when fever takes hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2018\/05\/09\/1803609115\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">findings<\/a>, which have recently been published in&nbsp;<em>PNAS<\/em>, reveal that higher body temperatures drive the activity of certain proteins that, in turn, switch genes responsible for the body\u2019s immune response on and off, as required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"page-title\">Temperature regulates NF-\u03baB dynamics and function through timing of A20 transcription<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C. We show that physiologically relevant temperature changes significantly perturb NF-\u03baB dynamics following TNF\u03b1 stimulation in single cells. Using experimentation informed by mathematical modeling, we found that these changes were mediated, at least in part, through the key feedback gene TNFAIP3\/A20. Curtailing A20 expression removed temperature sensitivity across the fever range (37 \u00b0C to 40 \u00b0C). Gene expression was generally unaffected between these temperatures, although a select set of NF-\u03baB\u2212regulated genes was up-regulated at early time points. These genes were predominantly involved in inflammation, signaling, and cell fate. The cellular response to inflammation may therefore be mechanistically and functionally regulated by temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Abstract<\/strong> NF-\u03baB signaling plays a pivotal role in control of the inflammatory response. We investigated how the dynamics and function of NF-\u03baB were affected by temperature within the mammalian physiological range (34 \u00b0C to 40 \u00b0C). An increase in temperature led to an increase in NF-\u03baB nuclear\/cytoplasmic oscillation frequency following Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF\u03b1) stimulation. Mathematical modeling suggested that this temperature sensitivity might be due to an A20-dependent mechanism, and A20 silencing removed the sensitivity to increased temperature. The timing of the early response of a key set of NF-\u03baB target genes showed strong temperature dependence. The cytokine-induced expression of many (but not all) later genes was insensitive to temperature change (suggesting that they might be functionally temperature-compensated). Moreover, a set of temperature- and TNF\u03b1-regulated genes were implicated in NF-\u03baB cross-talk with key cell-fate\u2013controlling pathways. It is a potent antioxidant and a cofactor for a family of biosynthetic and gene regulatory enzymes. Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system. Vitamin C supports epithelial barrier function against pathogens and promotes the oxidant scavenging activity of the skin, thereby potentially protecting against environmental oxidative stress. Vitamin C accumulates in phagocytic cells, such as neutrophils, and can enhance chemotaxis, phagocytosis, generation of reactive oxygen species, and ultimately microbial killing. It is also needed for apoptosis and clearance of the spent neutrophils from sites of infection by macrophages, thereby decreasing necrosis\/NETosis and potential tissue damage. The role of vitamin C in lymphocytes is less clear, but it has been shown to enhance differentiation and proliferation of B- and T-cells, likely due to its gene regulating effects. Vitamin C deficiency results in impaired immunity and higher susceptibility to infections. In turn, infections significantly impact on vitamin C levels due to enhanced inflammation and metabolic requirements. Furthermore, supplementation with vitamin C appears to be able to both prevent and treat respiratory and systemic infections. Prophylactic prevention of infection requires dietary vitamin C intakes that provide at least adequate, if not saturating plasma levels (i.e., 100\u2013200 mg\/day), which optimize cell and tissue levels. This is simply the reality, irrespective of whether such feelings \u201cmake sense\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following list is not exhaustive, just a collection of some of the factors that make mask wearing, especially forced masking, so distressing to many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few important things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Not every listed issue is true for every person who finds masks distressing.<\/li><li>Each issue amplifies the other ones, so that the cumulative distress is far greater than the sum of its parts. It\u2019s like the difference between 1+2+3+\u202610 and 1x2x3x\u202610 (55 vs 3,628,800).<\/li><li>This list is not exhaustive.<\/li><li>The short explanations are intended to give a bit more insight into how people might typically experience that particular stress. They are not intended to comprehensively define the issue.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-sense-of-helplessness\">A Sense of Helplessness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being at the mercy of the arbitrary and capricious whims of others makes you feel a sense of helplessness, which is extremely stressful and grueling, and can eventually break a person mentally and emotionally, and is therefore a favored tactic used by tyrants to break the will of the population so that they are too broken to revolt (see Stalin\u2019s reign of terror).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-invalidating-your-personal-identity\">Invalidating Your Personal Identity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masking is now \u2013 regardless of the factual merits \u2013 a political symbol in society. Being forced to mask is by definition being forced to yield in ones own actions \u2013 and worse, in ones public appearance \u2013 to your ideological and\/or political opposition. Imagine if the government decided to make wearing a religious skullcap mandatory for everyone \u2013 you can make the same argument that is being made for masking \u2013 what\u2019s the big deal, you barely notice it, etc \u2013 I am quite confident that atheists for instance would&nbsp;would feel very keenly the assault on their personal identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deprives-ruins-human-interactions\">Deprives \/ Ruins Human Interactions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quality and nature of social interactions is greatly reduced. Every interaction behind masks is fundamentally different. Interacting in this way can feel sad, despondent, isolating, cold, and\/or cruel, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-over-time-changes-your-personality\">Over Time Changes Your Personality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facemasks are a radical and unnatural impingement on normal mental and emotional functioning. Over time, this can change your personality \u2013 such as making you less social, less outgoing, more suspicious, decreased tendency or desire to be kind and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-general-feeling-of-being-trapped-in-a-nightmare\">A General Feeling of Being Trapped in a Nightmare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people feel a clear and distinct sense of being trapped in some sort of perverse nightmare as a result of covid policies, which is an extremely distressing experience, especially when there feels like there is no end in sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-elementary-lack-of-fairness\">Elementary Lack of Fairness&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are very sensitive to fairness, and can feel enormous stress and distress when treated unfairly, especially when the unfair treatment is egregious. Mask policies are literally imposing on some people so other people can feel safer \u2013 a grotesquely unequal treatment, that in order to help the emotional health of the scared-to-death-of-covid pro-maskers, everyone else\u2019s mental &amp; emotional health will be trampled on by forced masking. Moreover, mask mandates preferentially enshrines the political, moral, and ideological views and sensibilities of one segment of society without any justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-stress-of-difficulty-communicating\">The Stress of Difficulty Communicating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The frustration that comes from difficulty communicating is underappreciated, and tends to leave people feeling annoyed, frustrated and stressed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-damage-from-failed-communication\">The Damage From Failed Communication<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This particular harm also has another, more tangible dimension \u2013 often, people having a hard time communicating simply give up, and giving up is itself an added stress factor that leaves people frazzled. If you\u2019re talking to your doctor and you \u201cgive up\u201d instead of making sure you understood what he was trying to tell you \u2013 especially older people who psychologically tend to both give up faster and have more innate difficulty physically hearing to begin with \u2013 that could be a big problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dehumanization-through-forced-anonymity\">Dehumanization Through Forced Anonymity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The face is the most visibly manifest characteristic that sets you apart as a unique individual. Masks, by covering your face, strip you to some degree of your sense of being a unique individual and instead makes you feel more like a number than a person. It also distorts your sense of the humanity of others, as you inevitably become trained to perceive other people as lacking human-ness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-they-re-so-darn-uncomfortable\">They\u2019re so Darn Uncomfortable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masks can be extremely uncomfortable to wear, especially for long stretches at a time.
