Kevin Jon Vanhoozer<\/strong> (born March 10, 1957) is an American theologian<\/a> and current research professor of Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School<\/a> (TEDS) in Deerfield, Illinois<\/a>. Much of Vanhoozer’s work focuses on systematic theology<\/a>, hermeneutics<\/a>, and postmodernism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Three-Chapter Controversy<\/strong>, a phase in the Chalcedonian<\/a> controversy, was an attempt to reconcile the non-Chalcedonians<\/a> of Syria<\/a> and Egypt<\/a> with Chalcedonian Christianity<\/a>, following the failure of the Henotikon<\/a>.       Before 1870, belief in papal infallibility was not a defined requirement of Catholic faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The dissenters, while holding the General Councils of the Church infallible, were unwilling to accept the dogma of papal infallibility, and thus a schism<\/a> arose between them and the Church, resulting in the formation of communities in schism with Rome, which became known as the Old Catholic Churches<\/a>. The vast majority of Catholics accepted the definition.[88]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The dogma of papal infallibility is rejected by Eastern Orthodoxy<\/a> for similar reasons. Eastern Orthodox Christians hold that the Holy Spirit<\/a> will not allow the whole Body of Orthodox Christians to fall into error[121]<\/a><\/sup> but leave open the question of how this will be ensured in any specific case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        In the Decretum<\/em> of Gratian, a 12th-century canon lawyer, the pope is attributed the legal right to pass judgment in theological disputes, but he was certainly not guaranteed freedom from error. The pope\u2019s role was to establish limits within which theologians, who were often better suited for the full expression of truth, could work. Thus, the pope\u2019s authority was as a judge, not an infallible teacher.[35]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The doctrine began to visibly develop during the Reformation, leading to a formal statement of the doctrine by St. Robert Bellarmine in the early 17th century, but it did not come to widespread acceptance until the 19th century and the First Vatican Council.[34]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Henry Robert Percival<\/strong> (April 30, 1854 – September 22, 1903) was a prominent American Episcopal priest and author. After studies at the University of Pennsylvania<\/a> and the General Theological Seminary<\/a> in New York, he was made a deacon on May 27, 1877, and ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1878. Percival served briefly after ordination at Grace Church, Merchantville, New Jersey<\/a>, and as curate from 1878 to 1880 at a chapel of Christ Church, Philadelphia<\/a>. He was elected rector of the Church of the Evangelists, Philadelphia, in 1880, and pursued a plan of Anglo-Catholic enrichment of its services; he oversaw the building of a new church beginning in 1885 and the planting of S. Elisabeth’s Church as a nearby mission under the care of the Congregation of the Companions of the Holy Saviour<\/a> and William Ignatius Loyola McGarvey. (Since 1922, the Evangelists church building has housed the Fleisher Art Memorial<\/a>.) Percival retired as rector in 1897, citing ill health, and was succeeded by the Reverend Charles W.
