Antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) of SARS-CoV-2 infection has recently emerged as one hypothesis to explain the severe clinical manifestations associated with COVID-19 [[1], [2], [3], [4]]. Simply put, ADE is an immunological phenomenon whereby a previous immune response to a virus can render an individual more susceptible to a subsequent analogous infection [5] MacNeil’s PhD student, Jeremia Coish, says one rare complication to look out for is antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), a paradoxical immune phenomenon typically associated with dengue hemorrhagic fever.
