The basalt is stored in a metal container, insulated by a layer of rock wool of 1 m (3 feet) thick. Thanks to this insulation, the heat can be stored for months, even years and be used to heat houses, for instance. All the materials can easily be recycled.
A proof-of-concept installation is currently in use in Sint-Oedenrode, the Netherlands. The system consist of a container with spiralling pipes and 40 m3 basalt, covered in a layer of rock wool. The energy of 50 PV solar panels are stored in summer and used to heat an event hall in winter. Another trial project is in Boekel, the Netherlands, where the energy of 700 PV solar panels will be stored to heat 36 houses all year round.
Will your body be the battery of the future?

The average human, at rest, produces around 100 watts of power. This equates to around 2000 kcal of food energy, which is why your recommended daily intake of calories is around 2000 kcal. Over periods of a few minutes (or a few hours in the case of trained athletes), we can comfortably sustain 300-400 watts — and in the case of very short bursts of energy, such as sprinting, some humans can output up to 2,000 watts.
As it stands, battery technology is by far the biggest limitation when it comes to modern technology. Batteries are large, heavy, and except for one recent breakthrough can only be fashioned into a few very restrictive shapes (cylinders, bricks). If we could remove batteries from the equation, it would suddenly be possible to have truly wearable computers — computers wrapped around your wrist, embedded in your shoes, or woven into your clothes.
Now, just so we’re clear, this isn’t my crazy pipe dream. Engineers have been working on ways of reclaiming wasted energy for years, first through “dumb” methods that capture waste heat, and more recently using microelectronic and nanoscale devices that capture energy from your every movement. In Sweden, for example, Stockholm’s Central Station uses heat exchangers to convert commuter body heat into hot water, which is then piped to an office building next door — an approach that could easily be replicated in shopping malls and supermarkets around the world. Last year, we wrote about a piezoelectric film — a material that you can place anywhere to produce electricity from the smallest of movements, such as typing on a keyboard or the swing of your arms as you walk. The University of Wisconsin has created a special shoe that uses electrowetting to produce 10 watts — a huge amount of energy — just from walking.

Yo no”, indicó.
Scientists develop ‘magic carpet’ technology
A prototype that imitates the enchanting flying motion of a magic carpet has been developed by physicists at Princeton. Hop on.Lee BellOct. 5, 2011 4:31 a.m. PT The prototype imitates a magic rug by lifting sheets of conductive plastic with waves of electrical current. The sheets’ rippling then controls thin pockets of air and propels itself forwards and backwards.

Believing in “Bad Vibes” Exploring the science of emotional residues By Daisy Grewal on November 1, 2011 [i]ntriguing new research suggests that it may have biological underpinnings. A well-publicized study from earlier this year demonstrated that human tears emit a chemical that other people detect and respond to. Specifically, women’s tears were shown to reduce testosterone and sexual arousal in men. Research by Wen Zhou and Denise Chen of Rice University have demonstrated that human sweat glands emit distinct chemicals when people experience different emotions. In addition, they showed evidence that other people can sense those chemicals at a later point in time. Taken together, these new findings suggest that our intuitive beliefs in emotional residue may be more than just superstition.

The World Wireless System was a turn of the 20th century proposed telecommunications and electrical power delivery system designed by inventor Nikola Tesla based on his theories of using Earth and its atmosphere as electrical conductors. He claimed this system would allow for “the transmission of electric energy without wires” on a global scale[1] as well as point-to-point wireless telecommunications and broadcasting. He made public statements citing two related methods to accomplish this from the mid-1890s on.

Pyramids packed with fossil shells
Monday, 28 April 2008Jennifer Viegas
Discovery News Many of Egypt’s most famous monuments, such as the Sphinx and Cheops pyramid at Giza, contain hundreds of thousands of marine fossils, according to a new study. Most of the fossils are intact and preserved in the monument walls, giving clues to how the monuments were built.
The authors suggest the stones that make up the Giza plateau, Fayum and Abydos monuments must have been carved out of natural stone as they reveal what chunks of the sea floor must have looked like over 4000 years ago, when the buildings were erected.
“The observed random emplacement and strictly homogenous distribution of the fossil shells within the whole rock is in harmony with their initial in situ setting in a fluidal sea bottom environment,” write Professor Ioannis Liritzis and his colleagues from the University of the Aegean and the University of Athens.
