carllentz Our time at HillsongNYC has come to an end. This is a hard ending to what has been the most amazing, impacting and special chapter of our lives. Leading this church has been an honor in every sense of the word and it is impossible to articulate how much we have loved and will always love the amazing people in this church. When you accept the calling of being a pastor, you must live in such a way that it honors the mandate. That it honors the church, and that it honors God. When that does not happen, a change needs to be made and has been made in this case to ensure that standard is upheld. Laura and I and our amazing children have given all that we have to serve and build this church and over the years I did not do an adequate job of protecting my own spirit, refilling my own soul and reaching out for the readily available help that is available. When you lead out of an empty place, you make choices that have real and painful consequences. I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life and held accountable for that. This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions. I now begin a journey of rebuilding trust with my wife, Laura and my children and taking real time to work on and heal my own life and seek out the help that I need. Scholar Claims to Authenticate the Bulla of Servant of King Jeroboam II

Ben-Gurion University Professor, Yuval Goren, recently announced his authentication of a clay seal impression (bulla) of a servant of King Jeroboam II.  This announcement comes ahead of the publication of his scientific study in the Eretz Yisrael journal, which will later to be published in English in the Israel Exploration Journal.  The bulla’s impression is almost identical to the much larger jasper seal that was discovered at Megiddo in 1904, and subsequently lost.  It bears the image of a roaring lion and a paleo-Hebrew inscription, “l’Shema eved Yerov’am” (Belonging to Shema the servant of Jeroboam).  Scholars believe Shema was a servant in the courts of the Israelite king Jeroboam II, who reigned in the 8th century BC.  The clay bulla was purchased in the 1980’s without provenance from a Bedouin antiquities dealer for only 10 old Israeli shekels.  Given the lack of provenance, and the fact it was purchased so cheaply on the antiquities market, it was believed the seal impression was a forgery.  However, Goren developed a strict set of testing protocols involving a series of overlapping tests from a variety of disciplines.  One test involved removing a fragment of the clay to examine the mineral makeup and another analyzed the isotopic composition of the patina. He assembled an interdisciplinary team and studied hundreds of authentic seal impressions discovered in excavations to secure a reference point.   Goren began testing the artifact five years ago on the condition that it be turned over to the Israel Antiquities Authority if it proved authentic.  The authentication of the seal impression of Shema, the servant of Jeroboam, if accurate and properly understood, affirms the historicity of King Jeroboam II, son of Joash (2 Kings 13:13).

The Temple Mount Sifting Project recently announced the discovery of a gold granule bead dating back to the Iron-Age.  The cylindrical bead measures 6mm in diameter and 4mm in height, and is constructed of four layers, each consisting of tiny gold balls attached to one another.  The Co-Director of the Temple Mount Sifting Project, Dr. Gabriel Barkay, recalled that several almost-identical silver beads were found at Ketif Hinom. Similar gold beads were also found at Megiddo, at Tel el-Ajjul and at Tel el-Farah, in layers dated to the 12th to 9th centuries BC. Finding gold jewelry outside of graves or treasure troves is rare in Israel; in antiquity, gold jewelry was only worn by the rich, and not by the common people.  Scholars are unsure of the purpose of the bead, and whether it was worn by a wealthy person visiting the First Temple or by one of the important priests.

According to a new theory put forward by researchers from Hebrew University and Haifa University, several ancient caches of silver appear to be deliberate attempts to counterfeit silver.  Scholars chemically analyzed Iron-Age caches of silver from different locations in the Levant, including Beit She’an, Megiddo and Ashkelon, and discovered that they have low quantities of actual silver and  contain high quantities of copper, mixed with arsenic to make them look shiny, like silver.  Before coinage was invented, people would weigh out pieces of silver to pay for things.  Thus, Abraham purchased the field and cave of cave of Machpelah in which to bury his wife Sarah for 400 shekels of silver (Gen. 23:16).  Caches of silver pieces (proto-currency) from before 1900 BC were found to have 100% silver content.  However, the caches from the southern Levant that date from 1200-950 BC were found to have up to 80% copper content, mixed with arsenic, and only a small amount of actual silver.  The authors of the study suggest that the attempt to give these metal fragments the appearance of silver was a deliberate attempt at forgery.  They theorize that broken trade routes from places, such as Turkey, Greece, and Spain led to a lack of silver in the area during the Iron Age, and that forgers used copper from the Timna mines to essentially “counterfeit money.”

A new study in the Journal of Archaeological Science has found an increase in lead poisoning in people living in the Levant in the Iron Age.  Scholars analyzed 41 teeth from 31 individuals who lived from 1200 BC to 331 BC; the remains came from burial sites across modern-day Israel, including Abel Beth Maacah and Megiddo in the north and Tel es-Safi/Gath in the south.  They found that nine of the 31 individuals had levels of lead in their teeth that were 25 times higher than a baseline established from local Neolithic people who lived before metallurgy was widespread.  These levels would not have been high enough to induce the effects of lead poisoning, and are lower than levels in the Roman-era, which were 100 times higher.  The studies authors suggest that the increased lead levels may have been a result of smelting and casting metals at nearby workshops, as well as the increase in metal trading.  While the study presents an interesting analysis of lead poisoning in ancient people, it must be cautioned that this small sample size may not be entirely representative of the entire Iron Age population in the Levant.

Davidic-Era Fort Discovered in the Golan Heights

Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a 3000-year-old fort in the Golan Heights which they believe may have been part of the ancient kingdom of Geshur.  The fort covers approximately 1 acre and has 1.5 meter-thick walls built of large basalt stones.  It was dated to the 11th-9th centuries B.C. based on the pottery, which is similar to the Iron-Age pottery at Megiddo.  A large stone engraved with two horned figures with outstretched arms was discovered inside the fort next to a stone table, which may have been an alter.  The etchings are similar to the relief of a horned figure discovered at et-Tell, which many believe was the capital of the kingdom of Geshur.  The similarity of the iconography at both sites have led scholars to connect the two – both politically and spiritually, as it appears they both worshiped the moon-god.  Scripture records that the David married Maakah, the daughter of Talmai the king of Geshur (2 Sam. 3:3) and that it was in Geshur that their son Absalom sought refuge after killing his brother Amnon (2 Sam. 13:23-39).

House Church Discovered in Laodicea

A 2000-year-old house was recently unearthed in ancient Laodicea, with evidence that part of the home had been converted into a church.  The house, which was used in the first century A.D. was discovered next to the northern theater.  The massive structure covered an area of 2000 square meters and had a courtyard surrounded with corridors and 20 columns.  While the house itself dates to the first-century AD, the section that was converted to a church comes from a later period.  Professor, Celal Şimşek, stated, “We think that the Laodicea Church was built after Christianity was made free, and the high-ranking clergy there probably lived in this house, but we have not yet made a clear determination regarding this.”  The excavations and restoration have been going on for a year, and scholars are hopeful that this discovery will be help provide information on the spread of Christianity in Laodicea, one of the seven cities to which the Apostle John wrote his letters to the churches (Rev. 3:14-22).

Cache of Intact 2000-Year-Old Jars Unearthed

Archaeologists working at Khirbet Kafr Mer, near Beit El, discovered dozens of complete jars and other artifacts at the bottom of a cistern.  The vessels date to the Second-Temple period, and were used by residents in a Jewish village that occupied the area around the time of Jesus. The cistern had been repurposed at some point in antiquity and converted from a water basin into a storage basement for vessels.  Some of the vessels were found within plastered niches carved into the walls of the cistern.  While many archaeological excavations in Israel were canceled, the dig at Khirbet Kafr Mer continued.  The discovery of intricately carved stone table at the site was announced in August.

If Moses did not omit pharaoh’s personal name for theological reasons, then why did he omit it? The answer is found in the historical development of monarchial terms. The dynastic title, “pharaoh,” derives from the word that literally means, “great house.” During Egypt’s Old Kingdom (ca. 2715-2170 BC), the word was used of the royal palace. Not until sometime during the middle of the 18th Dynasty, slightly before the reign of Thutmose III (ca. 1506-1452 BC), the father of Amenhotep II, was it used as an epithet for the Egyptian monarch. However, the standard practice of Thutmose III’s time was to leave enemy kings unnamed on official records. The campaign of Thutmose III against a rebellious coalition at Megiddo, instigated by the Empire of Mitanni, was fomented by the King of Kadesh (on the Orontes River), who-in The Annals of Thutmose III-merely was called, “that wretched enemy of Kadesh.” Moreover, when Egyptian scribes listed the booty that was confiscated after the Battle of Megiddo, they did not name the opposing king whose possessions the Egyptians plundered, referring to him only as “the prince,” or “the Prince of Megiddo.”19 The Amada Stele of Amenhotep II, which boasts of the king’s successful battles against seven Syrian tribes of Takhsi, identifies these foreign rulers only as “seven chieftains,” whose names are all left unrecorded.20

In the Memphis Stele of Amenhotep II, reference is made to his campaigns in Edom, Canaan, and Syria. All of the foreign kings whom he defeated, deposed, or killed also went unnamed in this victory stele. Mention was even made of the chieftains of Naharin (the land to the east of the Euphrates River), Khatti (the Hittites), and Babylon. Despite the prominence of these kings, they nonetheless remain anonymous as well.21 During the Ramesside period (ca. 1300-1100 BC), the singular term “pharaoh” was widely used, continuing to be popular until the late period. As Hoffmeier states, “From its inception until the tenth century [BC], the term ‘Pharaoh’ stood alone, without juxtaposed personal name. In subsequent periods, the name of the monarch was generally added on.”22 Therefore, Moses’ practice of omitting pharaoh’s throne-name next to the dynastic title, “pharaoh,” followed the standard practice of the day in ancient Egypt, not coincidentally the site of his literary training.

Moreover, Moses also refrained from writing the names of other pharaohs who are attested in the Pentateuch, including the “good pharaoh” whom Jacob blessed and Joseph faithfully served (Gen 47:7). What theological reason could there be for omitting the name of this blessed pharaoh? Certainly the answer cannot be, “To keep him humble!”, since Moses wrote centuries after both this pharaoh and his dynasty had disappeared from the earth. Therefore, the exodus-pharaoh’s name was neither omitted for theological reasons, nor to discourage the curiosity of modern historians who desire to identify him. Instead, the exodus-pharaoh’s throne-name is absent for one reason alone: a skilled writer named Moses, born in Egypt and trained as a prince in all of the ways of the royal court of Egypt (Acts 7:22), followed the standard practice of his day by leaving unnamed the foreign monarch who assumed the role of a dreaded enemy of his own nation, in this case Israel.

The Christian scriptures depicted Jesus himself to have recognised Moses as the author of at least some portions of the Pentateuch (e.g., the Gospel of John, verses 5:46–47), and the early Christians therefore followed the rabbis.[40][41] Like them, they addressed those passages which seemed to cast doubt on the Mosaic tradition: Jerome, for example, felt that “unto this day” implied an author long after the time of Moses, presumably the 5th century BC sage Ezra.[42]

A bill on California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk that would reduce criminal penalties for sexual activity between gay teens and young adults has ignited an uproar over sex offenses and LGBTQ rights.

Senate Bill 145, sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener, would eliminate automatic sex-offender registration for adults who have voluntary oral or anal sex with 14-to-17-year-olds when the offender is within 10 years of the age of the teenager involved. 

Judges already have discretion under state law to decide at sentencing whether to register an offender who has uncoerced vaginal sex with a teenage girl aged 14 to 17 within the 10-year age gap.

“Senate Bill 145 is an anti-discrimination law,” Mr. Wiener, a San Francisco legislator who is openly gay, told ABC10. “It ends discrimination against LGBTQ people on the sex offender registry.”

He pushed back against what he called a “massive misinformation campaign” amid escalating national outrage on the right.
